HOW TO GET TO MOAB:
Here are your public transportation options.
Fly into Moab Canyonlands Field. About 20 minutes south of the airport on Hwy 191. www.grandcountyutah.net/airport/scheduled.htm
Fly into Grand Junction, about two hours away. Take I-70 west to 191 South, exit, about 30 minutes to Moab. www.walkerfield.com
Fly into Salt Lake, which is about a four hour drive to Moab. Take I-15 south to Hwy 6 through Price to I-70. Turn left (east) on I-70 at Green River and take Hwy 191 South into Moab. www.slcairport.com
We've had quite a few people rent high clearance or four wheel drive vehicles like jeeps from Fox Rent A Car in Salt Lake City for around $50 a day. In Moab, they are $125 a day, minimum. Fox number is 1-800-225-4369. www.foxrentacar.com
There are various shuttle services from surrounding cities. www.discovermoab.com/shuttle.htm
Train into Green River. I can pick you up but is my least favorite option. My experience on average Amtrak is 2 to 4 hours late and it's about a two hour drive for me each way. I could spend a whole day there waiting. I'm not coming until you get there so you'll be waiting awhile. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage
HOW TO GET TO BASE CAMP FROM MOAB:
1. Drive your vehicle. Extensive work has been done to the road. It still requires ground clearance and if there's a lot of rain, or looks like it has rained recently, you might call first. 435-258-6264 is our Skype number at the lodge or we may be in town and our cell is 435-260-1783. If you don't show up in an hour and some change, we'll come looking for you.
2. We'll come get you. We don't mind and we won't charge you but generally there are guests staying at the lodge and we spend a significant amount of time out hiking, ATVing, kayaking, and in general exploring with them and there are no guarantees we'll be able to time our arrival in Moab with yours.
3. Down the Colorado River with Tag A Long by boat. Tag A Long charges $15 per person to drop you off or pick you up. There are other boat companies that will do the same but charge at least twice as much. www.tagalong.com
DIRECTIONS TO BASE CAMP FROM MOAB:
- From Route 191 go west between Burger King and McDonalds, turn on "Kane Creek Blvd." Sometimes spelled "Cane Creek Blvd"
- At the Y in the road, STAY STRAIGHT, and the Colorado River will be on your right side.
- After 4 miles of paved road it will turn into a hard packed dirt road- RESET YOUR ODOMETER NOW- You'll wind through the canyon and then into a valley area. You will cross over two creek beds. Depending on the time of the year, they'll probably be dry. If it's raining heavily, use discretion. The canyon lands produce quality mud.
- At approx. 6.3 miles from where you left the paved road, you will see the 1st "Hurrah Pass" directional sign- it will be after you cross the 2nd creek bed. There are two signs within a few hundred feet of each with for the first time actually point in the correct direction. The road splits solidly, take the right fork.
- From the time you left the paved road depending on how comfortable you are at driving at best a dirt road this should have taken you about 30 minutes to begin your ascent up Hurrah Pass. You will go 2.7 miles from this point to the top of "Hurrah Pass". There is substantial elevation to the road leading up the pass and down again. If height is an issue for you, the next 30 minutes are going to be full of issues.
- At the top of "Hurrah Pass" you will see an elevation sign on your left and will be able to see the roof of Base Camp directly in front of you, just this side of the widest part of the river. If you have a walkie talkie we are channel 20. If you have Verizon or US Cellular and walk around and experiment a little you can get two bars on your cell. This will likely be the last time your cell phone works though we've found two places at the lodge where if you stand just right, put your phone on speaker, point it at Hurrah Pass, you might get one bar.
- From the top of Hurrah down the west side is exactly 2.3 miles to the Base Camp sign. YOU MUST TURN RIGHT AT THE SIGN. Kobae our security tortoise may be out wandering the property and he loves to hang out here so don't run over him. Turn right at our sign. and go down the hill to the first of two gates, drive through it and We are the next left hand turn. If either or both of the two gates are closed (unlikely), they will look locked. They are not. Open them and drive through.
You will see a parking area on the left and WELCOME!!!
If we know you're coming and we're out with guests or hiking with Kobster we'll leave you directions for your room or hogan or there will be a walkie talkie on the cooler on the front porch. Use it to call us.
